Install OpenOffice 3.0 inside your Ubuntu 8.10!

Somehow, The Ubuntu Team has decided not to add the latest office products from Sun Microsystem. It’s because 3.0 release schedule has slipped quite a bit. Just like The Ubuntu Team has said in this site . Well, that’s not a big problem! I’m going to give you an easy method to install OpenOffice 3.0. Please do follow this simple tutorial.

1. Press alt+f2 button, and type : sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

2. Add this following code:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ubuntu intrepid main deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ubuntu intrepid main

For hardy, just simply change the “intrepid” word into “hardy” .

3. Go to terminal, and type sudo apt-get update .

4. Go to the update manager, and update your OpenOffice 3.0.

Enjoy!

Correct usage if not running in a terminal for alt+f2: gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ubuntu intrepid main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ubuntu intrepid main

Nice tip! It didn’t work for me though until I had made two separate lines
as above of the given address text within the sources list.

hello, please make the repositories line like this:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ubuntu intrepid main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ubuntu intrepid main

close the gedit and try to re-load your repositories. hope it will work

that is what I have, no luck still. Do I have to uninstall open office first? I have OOo 2.4 on my system.

@XFM
Same with me. Seems like openoffice 3.0 got removed from the servers?

Yes, looks like the packages are gone for the moment…try this instead.

@Bantu Al
Thanks Bantu Al, I found the http://download.openoffice.org/other.html#en-US with the collection of installation packages.

I installed 3.0 from there. When I start the program (/opt/openoffice.org3/program/soffice), the ” Welcome to Openoffice” screen apears. However, the applications fonts are large, and the icons only partially appear. To refresh the screen and see all icons I have to click into the screen. It seems like something very strange is happening to the fonts, etc. Has anyone seen this behaviour?
