Shuttleworth stated specific goals (not a 'Growl-clone' or 'implementation of Growl'), and Mumbles is not mature yet. Besides the basic framework you also need application support and integrated themes.

You can see the suggestion mentioned on Brainstorm as well.

Specto is an alternative for Mumbles. I think its even in packages http://specto.sourceforge.net/
Snarl is an open source notification system for Windows http://www.fullphat.net/

Growl is BSD-licensed btw.

Perhaps he'll use an existing project as base.

And, network abstraction between these notification systems could be possible, but theres also syslog for that, and some stuff won't work over network (such as 'eth0 cable is disconnected').

I think the "clone" thing is only his opinion about this software concept. I think this is a good concept. But I also think this software also can disturbing people.

He wasn't announcing a clone of GROWL but a similar concept. This may be a point from a developers point of view, but to clone GROWL, you have to start with GROWL and modify it.

No matter how much similarity there is in concepts, it is not said that one is a clone of the other.
